Here is the logo I created to represent our record label (company). The use of the vinyl record represents music and the r'n'b/soul records from the past. In order to create this I got a picture of a vinyl record from the internet and used the magnetic lasso from Photoshop and cut around it and in half. Furthermore, I used a gold colour overlay to blend in with the disc and the gold represents the status and power of the record label ' The Music Factory'.

Production Update Since the last time I updated this blog, my group and I have continued editing the music video footage we have and I have now completed editing the part of the opening scene where our main female performer walks out the apartment complex. I have also done parts of the establishing shots and I am now starting on the part where our main female performer is about to walk out her room. I aim to get this part fully edited by the end of the week.

Production Update
Today we had an Adobe Premier talk by one of the editing technician whereby he taught us vaulable skills and tools to use which can contribute to making the music video such as making a clip black and white and repairing the resoultion on video imagery. I found this very helpful and it will contribute to make the music video quite creative as well as conforming to conventions of an r'n'b music video.

Production Update
During this week and in the near future, our group would be concentrating on editing the music video so that the final product would be done by the deadline set. We have delegated each other with different sections of the footage filmed to create the music video and do it more effectively. For instance, im doing the parts of the opening scene and location shots which I am to finish next week to move onto editing other sections.

Production Update
What was said in the video: Today is the filming deadline and we only had little bits to film so my female performer and I went down to Westminster to film the last part of the opening scene where she walks out of her apartment complex. As while I was there I filmed a bit more location shots so when it comes to editing we have lots to choose from. We encountered lots of problems filming today mainly regarding the weather. It was raining very heavily today, so we had to film when the rain wasn’t so heavy and where it was sheltered to prevent the camera from getting wet. Another then that we got everything we needed and it’s going make editing that bit easier.

Assessing Practical Work
In order to improve our own practical work, as a class we watched an example of a level 4 music video then evaluated the music video mentioning what works well and what can be improved.
We watched a music video a previous group did for the A2 project which was called Eman and Roshane- Thump. We collectively identified that the things that worked well in the music video was that they used many different transitional techniques were used like fades not just straight cuts this in effect makes the editing seamless. Futhermore, the use of colour in the video had connotations and conveyed messages to the viewer. Parts of the video was in colour whilst other parts where in black and white which signifies the past and present. In order to improve this music video they could make sure that they do not chop heads and feet in the shots and make sure the camera does not shake.
After this we peer assessed our own production work and we noticed that the elements of our music video that is working well is that we had good editing techniques and the footage we had was not shaky. An aim we identified is that we need to use a variety of shots in order to make our music video more visually insteresting.

Production Update
Today as a group we did more Tricast filming for the performing parts of the music video. Also we have starting editing the footage we have already filmed to enable us to meet the music video deadline set for us.

Production Update
Today, we filmed our party/club scene. In order to do so we booked the drama room after school for use. We made the party/club scene look authentic through different mise-en-scene that we included. We used strobe lights and dark lighting to make it look realistic. As a group we worked together to pull of this scene, mainly by one person controlling the lights, one controlling the sound and one controlling the camera. In the following days we are aiming to get all the filming done. Tomorrow we plan to the tricast shots and on Friday we plan to film the last scene in South Bank and Westminister.

Production Update
Today we went to shoot another scene which is primarily in our opening sequence. We have added a new location into the music video. For the begining we have added a bedroom scene were the main female character is answering a phone call whereby someone is asking her to go out and her getting ready in her bedroom. We have added this scene into the storyline of the music video in order for the story to more effective and add to the female character's role.

Production Update
Today we started filming the opening scene of our music video and our tracking shots. Before this point we have encountered some problems which we dealt with. This includes us changing our female performer. This is due to our primary female performer Jaymee having commitment issues. However, our new female performer still fits into the conventions of female in a hip hop/ r'n'b music video. This far we have also filmed parts of the performing scenes using tricast but we still need to film more to ensure that we have the best footage to choose from.
Anita you have almost completed the research and planning tasks now - you just need to upload your vox pops. Your blog is well organised and easy to navigate. I particulalry like your use of slide shows for the visual elements of the planning work. Well done for all your hard work so far!

Tinie Tempah
2006- First Song- Wifey
This is Tinie Tempah's first single and video. This music video was only broadcasted on the english music channel, Channel U which is station that mainly plays english grime and R'n'B singles. This channel also has a very niche audience. Here we can see is quite low budget video through many elements of it. First of all, there are various shots of simplistic locations such as the high street, working class residential areas and random streets which look realistic and are not glamourised or enhanced in any way. Moreover, the costume within the music video looks very authentic in conveying a representation of youth. The costume Tinie Tempah is wearing at the beginning of the music video is very straight foward as he wears just a jumper, jeans and trainers which seem like clothing that male teenagers would casually wear. Lastly, the picture quality also gives us a hint that the music video had a low budget. The music video is mainly narrative based with slight performance shots. I felt that they made it mainly narrative based not only because the song itself tells a story but to make the music video more interesting and obtain the attention of audience. If they had used mainly performance shots they would have to make sure that it is constantly interesting which may acquire a higher budget for instance using tricaster or special effects which may be beyond the budget for the music video. This music video was produced before Tinie Tempah was signed to any record label.
2008- Tears
The music video is later in Tinie Tempah's career, two years after he released his first single. This music video was still aired on the same music channel-Channel U and was done when he still was unsigned. This music video is more narrative based with elements of performance which I feel is for the same reason as when the first music video was created (due to the low budget). Elements of the music video such as the settings of it still correlate to his last music video and there seems to be not much improve to the amount given to create the music video.
DECEMBER 2009- Pass Out ft Labrinth
At this point Tinie Tempah just signed onto Parlophone records, a subsidiary of EMI. This was Tinie Tempah’s first song that was exhibited to a mass audience through music channels like MTV base/hits/dance, Kiss and The Box. His sound and image has clearly changed. His sound has become more electro with rap whilst his style is more enhanced and current as he is wearing a leather jacket with an exaggerated hood and jeans that are more fitted. This slightly challenges conventions of the Rap genre. This music video is purely performance based which is different from his previous videos which were a mixture of performance and narrative. It is apparent that this video has a higher budget due to the Special effects used in this music which must have entailed using a Green Screen and the fact the it relies upon the performance shots to retain the audience's interest. There are more elements to this music video. There are a range of shots, range in duration to correlate with the pace of the song and there are links between the text and the song as the lyrics of the sound appears in some part of the music video.
2010- Frisky ft Labrinith
Written in the Stars ft Eric Tunner
Swedish House Mafia ft Tinie Tempah-Miami 2 Ibiza
Game Over Remix
Invincilbe ft Kelly Rowland With the single ‘Pass Out’ Tinie Tempah obtained the no.1 position on the UK Singles Charts which has had an obvious effect on his music videos. His music videos have become more visually interesting through different techniques such as special effects, background dancing and famous collerbations such as Kelly Rowland. I feel that his music videos have gotten better and received a higher budget due to the record label Parlophone having an increased confidence in Tinie Tempah’s ability to succeed and knowing that they would receive a return for making the music video through sales. His video mainly have still been performance based. 2011- Wonderman ft Ellie Goulding
Here is his lasts music video which is quite different from the over music videos that he has released as this music video is narrative based.
Themes incorporated in the music video and visual codes Post-Modernism will be shown in our music video through a movie style opening. Also style over content which is a convention of post-modernist music videos would be shown through the extra effects which will be incorporated in the music video such as stop motion and black and white effects. Feminism/Male gaze would be incorporated in our music video through the attractive female character in this music video who is the sexual interest of the male character in this video. Love is shown through the attraction between the male and female character in this music video and will be reinforced by the fact that the female character would always wear red which has connotations of lust and passion. Love is futher represented in the music video through some of the iconic locations we use such as the London Eye and the South Bank area.
Exhibtion of Music Channels Here are a selection of music channels that would exhibit the track we have choosen.
MTV Base is a 24-hour music and general entertainment channel from MTV Networks International. The channel focuses primarily on music from the world of R'n'B, hip-hop, reggae, soul and urban.
Kiss TV is a commercial music television. The playlist predominantly consists of mainstream hip-hop, Dance and R&B.It is based on the format of the Bauer owned London radio station Kiss 100.

Born and based in Rochester, NY, SINGNATURE is a group consisting of Lamar , Trent,Lawerence , and Willie Monroe making an upbeat R'N'B music.
My group and I have choosen to go for a R'n'B song for our media production. We collectively decided to go for this song as we can envision a strong narrative for this song with performance aspects. We aim to subvert the generic conventions associated with R'n'B videos but still have elements of a tradional Hip/Hop, R'n'B music videos.

Analysising RnB Music Videos
Bow Wow feat Omarion- Let me Hold You
Movie style opening= evident in the beginning of the text where there is a fade in to a long shot of a female character answering the phone and sharing dialogue with the main male character (Bow Wow). This is reinforced by the fact that after the dialogue when the song begins to play, Credits such as 'Barbarino Films presents' are used to make it seem even more like a short film. During the conversation a track in shot in order to get closer to the female character so that audiences would be able to see the female characters facial expression during the dialogue so that audiences would understand the passage more. The movie style dialogue ends with a fade out which makes it seem as if it is the end of any dialogue and it is becoming a music video.
Lots of fades are used within the music video to correlate with the smooth beat of the song and to make the music video appear more sosphisicated. Quick fade in and out are used in particular parts of the music video to be in sync with the beat.
Generic conventions and codes of the Hip Hop/ R'n'B genre are used within the music video. The shiny, expensive car (Range Rover), baggy jumper and jeans with bandana worn by Bow Wow. Long chain (Bling) and diamonte belt buckle also worn by Bow Wow and Omarion. The fact that the main female is of dual heritage (black and white) and attractive is conventional of hip hop/ r'n'b music videos.
The target audience for this song is young i.e 18 years old to 25 years and portrayed within the music video through the themes explored which a younger audience can relate to. The fact that the main characters go to a party is related to 'the youth' as it is commonly associated that in their spare time young people go to parties. The relationship shared between the male protagnist and the female character is one that is frequently encountered by a younger audience therefore they would be able to relate to it. It overall gratifies their target audience through the link of personal identity which is when audiences relate to the characters of a particular media text due to your own characteristics or traits/situations that are evident within the character or their life.
Overall, this music video was relevant for me to analyse due to the fact that it is an R'n'B music video which my song possibly is therefore giving me an insight to what the music video is like in terms of conventions and any subversions.

ANIMATED MUSIC VIDEOS
THE GORILLAZ
Gorillaz is a musical project created in 1998 by Damon Albarn of alternative rock band Blur and British cartoonist Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl. The band comprises of four characters; 2D (lead vocalist/keyboard), Murdoc (bass guitar), Noodle (guitar/ocassional vocals) and Russell (drums and percussion). Through their music videos, website and other media text they explore the virtual, fictional world. Their style in terms of musical sound is a combination of multiple genres including hip hop, electronic, pop and alternative rock. Currently, the Gorillaz have 3 albums with their second album 'Demon Days' going double platinum in the US, five times platinum in the UK and earned them a Grammy Award 2006 for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.
'WELCOME TO PLASTIC BEACH' is the name of the Gorillaz third album which is about each members journey to 'Plastic Beach' and innovative marketing strategies are employed to promote the album. For each character of the Gorillaz (fictional ones: 2D, Murdoc, Russell, Noodle) they have created 30 second videos (also known as 'Idents') which illustrates the beginning of their journey to 'Plastic Beach'. The single 'On Melancholy Hill' continues the story of their journey to 'Plastic Beach' from their previous music video 'Stylo'.
The Gorillaz- On Melancholy Hill DIRECTOR: Jamie Hewlett RELEASE DATE: 2010
Gorillaz - On Melancholy Hill found on Electronic The Gorillaz 'On Melancholy Hill' is a narrative based music video as it illustrates each band members journey to 'Plastic Beach'. This video continues from the music video 'Stylo'. The whole music video is animated using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) and 2D drawings. This is typical of the Gorillaz style as they always make animated music videos or in the case of the music video 'Stylo' there are animated aspects. The video opens with a passage of dialogue between Noodle (one of the Gorillaz members) and a ship host/ waiter which lasts for the first 28 seconds of the music video. It begins with an extreme long shot (XLS) of a ship moving in the water (ocean). The XLS is used to allow audiences to identify the setting of the music video. It then cuts to a Medium Shot (MS) of something dropping in the water. The director wants us to be aware of this hence why a MS was used to draw our attention to it. This then cuts to a low angle MS of planes flying over the ship. This makes the plane seem superior and links to the previous shot as it maybe the plane that dropped something in the water therefore making the plane also look suspicious and dangerous. The sounds used within this scene such as the ship horn, the plane flying over and the splash of the water are all used to create realism and make the music video seem authentic. It then cuts to a Long Shot (LS) of inside the ship with a host running down the corridor and goes into Noodle's room. He tells her that the 'ship is under attack' and they have to evacuate. The Mise-en-Scene inside Noodle's room promotes post-modernistic characteristics. Blurring of reality and ficiton is seen in this music video. There is a Medium Close up (MCU) of Noodles opening a suitcase; the suitcase itself is real and the shot size used highlights the contrast between the 2D character animation and the realistic suitcase. This is reinforced by the real lampshade in the background evident in this shot. By doing this, it also breaks down the boundary between the fictional world (2D) and reality (3D) as it combines both and makes fiction the reality. From this it cuts to a high angle shot of us looking down onto the gun which is in the suitcase from Noodle's perspective. The use of this shot is to draw our attention to what is in the suitcase and how realistic it looks. From this it cuts to a LS of the host outside the room. Noodle exits from the room and a MS tracking shot is used as Noodles holds the gun and walks down the corridor getting closer to the camera. Noodles costume, the mask in particular intrigues the audience and creates an enigma as we really know what will happen next as her facial expression is not seen. It then fades out then fades in to a logical pattern of sequence of Noodle firing a gun. (Close-Up(CU) of Noodle's face with her gritting her teeth. The fact that we can't see her whole body makes us wonder what she is doing to have that effect. Then dissolves to a MS of her firing a gun. This shot makes it evident to us what Noodle is doing.) At this point the music starts aswell. We then realise from the next shots like the low angle POV shot of Noddle that she is actually firing at the planes who were invading the ship because of her. When she escapes and lies on a life boat it dissolves into a XLS of a boat emerging which is the other Gorillaz characters (2D, Murdoc and Cyborg Noodle) from the previous video (Stylo) continuing their journey to 'Plastic Beach' eventually all the characters arrive by the end of the video. During the journey underwater to 'Plastic Beach' there are appearance from well known acts who are driving submarine. There is a MCU of Bruce Willis and he is position left of frame. Audiences will identify this is Bruce Willis as this was how he was introduced in 'Stylo' where he was chasing those Gorillaz characters and now it is continuing. There is a cut from another character to a MCU of Snoop Dogg and a MCU is used of De La Soul (who featured on their 'Feel Good inc. single). The shot size is used for audiences to recognise the characters drawn but the fact that they are there is significant as they feature on the Gorillaz new album. There is also a MCU of Mick Jones and Paul Simonon (former band members of Clash) who performed with the Gorillaz on this album wearing sailor hats. There anime were also wearing sailor outfits which is evident through the hat and the stripy t-shirt. One of the characters gets out a can of spinach and squeezes it open which falls in the other characters pipe. By doing this the character which had the spinanch gained muscles. This is a parody of the cartoon Popeye-the sailor man, which began in the late 1910s, as he was a sailor who gained muscles by eating spinach. Throughout the music video there is constant reference to 'Melancholy'. The colour scheme within the music video conveys this. At the beginning of the video where Noodle is battling the flying planes there are lots of deep reds and blacks which also connotes pain. Also during the scenes where the characters are underwater there are lots of deep blues and blacks which signifies sorrow and depression. The octopuses in the video where the only characters that were happy which is evident through their smiling faces but they got killed by the passing submarine which is sad therefore connecting to the song title and what the song is about. By doing this there is a constant connection between the sound and the imagery. When 'plastic beach' is discovered near the end of the music video the colour begins to lighten possibly as they are happier because they have discovered what they are looking for. There happiness is also connoted in their facial expression upon discovery. A CU is used on all of the characters to show audiences clearly their reaction. I feel that the target audience for this band and the music itself is a young audience predominately in the late teens (16 up) to late 20s. This is due to the sound of the band, most of their music have a 'party feel' to it as it is normally up tempo and uses electronics; that audience are more likely to go to parties, raves and clubs where this music would be playing. Furthermore, I feel that that the diversion theory is used in this music video in order to gratify audiences. This music video offers escapism from problems faced in their own lives through discovering the virtual world. By watching this music video, audiences are amused by another world that is portrayed as well as being able to see how other peole live on it therefore forgetting about your problems whilst you think about someone else.
In conclusion, I like the orginality of this music video as it takes on another way of creating the virtual world and still making it interesting through the combination of 2D drawings and 3D objects instead of just the typical 2D drawing that is used in normal animated videos. All in all, I will take in animation into consideration when making a music video as it can be more visually interesting.

TEXTUAL ANAYLSIS GREEN DAY- WHEN SEPTEMBER ENDS RELEASE DATE: 2006 DIRECTOR: Samuel Bayer NARRATIVE AND PERFORMANCE BASED
The music video is about the effects of war on civilians. This is portrayed through two characters- male and female who are a couple. The male character decides to go and fight the war in Iraq and it shows the effect that it has on the female character.
The opening of the music video is in the style of a film/movie. In the opening shot (Extreme Long Shot (XLS) of a couple on a daffodil field) there is the title of the song positioned left of frame. Also, the first beginning 1 minute and 45 seconds is a dialogue of a couple expressing their emotion for each other. They are positioned centre of the frame signifying their importance. Shot Reverse Shots are used on Close-up of the couples' face to help audiences keep track of the storyline as well as seeing their facial expression. At the end of the dialogue the music fades in and becomes non-diegetic sound.
Rock Genre Codes and Conventions evident in the video-XLS of the lead singer's eye showing his heavy eyeliner. Black hair and black costume of the band members also correspond to the song as it is about pain and sorrow related to war. This is reinforced by the colours used in the music video (red and black).
A varied audience are pleased when watching this music video.
Surveillance Theory= This music video reflects what it going on in the real world (war in Iraq). This allows us to learn about that society through the bad news (the guy going off to war) and makes us feel more secure and happy about our own lives which is grafitying.
Personal Identity Theory= This music video embodies this theory as people who are in that situation in real life (going off to war or knowing of people who went to war) can identify with the feelings portrayed by the characters especially the female character which will help them understand their own feelings and help express their own feelings as they come to realise that it is effecting mass amounts of people rather than just themselves.
Diversion= This music video provides some audiences with escapism from their own life problems by seeing someone who is worst off (the characters in the music video) therefore making them re-evaluate their own lives and maybe cherishing their lives more.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS -COLDPLAY-THE SCIENTIST DIRECTOR-Jamie Thraves RELEASE DATE-2002 CONCEPT BASED and NARRATIVE BASED MUSIC VIDEO
The scientist by Coldplay is a concept based music video as it is played backwards. By going back in time we find out that the narrative of the story is about a character (lead singer in Coldplay, Chris Martin) in the music video was in a car accident that killed the girl in the passenger seat (possibly girlfriend or friend) who ends up dead on the floor of a forest. The music video begins with an Extreme Close Up of a face (Chris Martin) and becomes a pulling out shot. From this it dissolves into a High Angle, Medium Shot of him on a matress on the street to a Long Shot of that. Whilst this technique is happening he says 'Tell you I'm Sorry, You don't know how are lovely you are' which creates the mood of being upset and him thinking about something which informs the audience that he has done something bad to someone which we might find out as the music video progresses. The use of a High Angle shot connotes his vunerability and weakness; possibly his lack of control over the situation he is in. The mise-en-scene within the beginning gives us different messages. It is obvious that Chris Martin is an ordinary guy. This is evident through his costume as he wears a simple long sleeve white top and black trousers. There is natural lighting used outside aswell which creates realism. The use of the matress (prop) informs us abit more about Chris Martin. The fact that he is lying on a matress in the street connotes that he is not thinking properly or he is depressed. This is further reinforced when there is a Long Shot of him on the matress which dissolves to a Medium Close Up tracking shot that pulls out allowing us to see the location more clearly. There is graffiti on the brownish cream buildings and they 'run down' which in itself looks depressing and reflects Chris Martin's state of mind. From this it cuts to an Extreme Close up of Chris Martin. There is a guy in the background riding a BMX bike that goes backwards. This conforms that the video is played on rewind and also informs us about the location; as it may be near or a skate park. During this shot Chris Martin is position to the left of the frame with is arm crossed over on the other. This connotes his lack of significance (maybe he feels he isn't important) through his position in the frame and his posture signifies him being troubled and sorrowful. From this it cuts to a Low Angle, Medium 360 degree Pan (panorama) shot; starting from behind Chris Martin. The use of the 360 Pan Shot shows his mindstate; probably confusion about the situation that he was pondering about earlier. There is a cut to a Medium Shot of A boy on a BMX bike which connotes the area he is in; either near or in a skate park. From this there are more scenes that conforms to the audience that the music video is played backwards. For instance when there is a Long Shot of him jumping over a brick wall to a dissolve of him walking down the street. As he walks down the street it dissolves to an Extreme Long Shot of him jumping over a little wall and going in a tunnel. As he does this he says 'Take me back to the start' which tells the audeince that we will soon find out what happened. From this it cuts to a Medium Shot of men playing basketball which he walks through. This scene shows other people having fun which contrasts Chris Martin's mood and advises us that the situation that happened mainly effects him rather than effecting many therefore elimating possible incidents that the we (audience) could have thought had happened. For example, a fire or robbery. Chris Martin continues to walk down the street and then it cuts to a Medium Close of him in front of train tracks then he walks across them. In the background, there is lots of trees and there are grey clouds in the sky reflecting his mood. The fact that he is by himself shows he is lonely and walking on the track tracks shows that the situation has effected his thinking and he is withdrawn as it is a dangerous thing to do. Later there is an Extreme Close-Up of his feet walking on the train tracks confirming he is actually walking on it. It fades out from a Medium Close Up of Chris Martin walking through the train tracks to a fade in of an Extreme Long Shot of forestry. This is used to show a new location and new part of the story. Within the forest he puts on a jacket and he continues walking. It eventually goes to a Medium Close Up of Chris Martin walking backwards and we can make out a body lying on the floor in the background. At this point different suggestions come to mind which gratifies the audience as they start to guess what had happened. Then it cuts to a Medium Shot of the girl on the floor which confirms that she is dead. It then cuts and he gradually gets into the car saying that he is 'going back to the start' which tells us that we are about to find out what happened which satisifies audiences. There is a Extreme Long Shot of the car tumbling up the hill and then a Medium Shot of the front of the cae reversing into the road with the wood fence mending which shows that they had skidded of the road which caused the girl to die. As it continues to reverse down the road there is a Close Up Point of View Shot Chris Martin driving. This allows audeinces to be in his perspective while he was driving. During the car ride, he has conversations with the girl and he smiles which signifies that he was happy before and the incident altered his mood; until then he was happy. The music video ends with a fade out. This video uses different techniques to gratify audiences. The fact that it uses different editing techniques like dissolves and fades besides just using the usual straight cuts retains the audiences interest. The music still subtly conforms to conventions of the rock as there is abit of performance when Chris Martin is walking down the street singing which gratify audiences through familarity. I feel that audiences who watch this music video are gratified through the diversion theory. This is where audiences are provided with a form of escapism from their own lives whilst thinking about others through what is portrayed in the media text. The fact that this music video has such a tragic storyline it makes audiences put their own problems into perspective and maybe feel that at least their life isn't as bad as the character in the music video. In conclusion, after analysing this music video I feel it is successful in promoting emotion and the diversion theory. The combination of both concept and narrative work well in this music video and make it that more interesting especially as it isn't common.
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF POST MODERNIST MUSIC VIDEO Lady Gaga-Paparazzi Director: Jonas Akerlund Release Date:2008
The music video opens of Paparazzi opens with an iris-in of a Medium Shot of palm trees. The use of the iris-in is pastiche and homage (convential techniques of a postmodernism music videos) as this editing technique was conventional of American Sitcoms and Soap Operas in the 1950's such as It's a Great Lifeand I love Lucy. The Medium Shot of the palm trees have connotations of Hollywood specifically Beverly Hills which is especially known for movie stars and studios. From this there is a cut to a Close Up of a flower head and a cut to an Extreme Long Shot of a grand, magnolia manison with a green yard and palm trees. This mansion relates to what audiences would consider as a typical house in Hollywood therefore meeting audiences expectations which gratifies them. The mansion also connotes wealth. The use of these cuts at the beginning allows audiences to identify the location of the music video. The mise-en-scene at the beginning of the video further connotes wealth and glamour. From the exterior shots outside it fades to an Extreme Close Up of chandelier diamonds than fades to a Medium Shots of it which also allows us to see the decorative roof and the size of the chandelier. This represents the lady who owns this house (Lady Gaga) as a rich madam. After this there are cuts to different parts of the house such as the staircase and out on the balcony. The balcony has a view of the sea and mountains; whilst there is a champagne bottle on the fence and a marble figure which futher promotes luxury and the indivdual being rich. Throughout the beginning of the video it is mellow with birds chirrping during exterior shots which makes the text authentic and creates realism therefore presenting fiction as reality. The typography inserted within the beginning of the video such as 'A Serial Pictures Production' and 'Starring Lady Gaga' is a typical way to introduce a program in the 1950's. When there is a cut to a Medium Shot of money splashed on the florr with broken glass and mess it looks as if something is wrong and it is the beginning of a problem arising which relates to sitcoms and soap operas as there is also a situations that happens that mainly goes wrong. Within the video the pictures and the lyrics relate. There is a scene where Lady Gaga and her lover are on the balcony. A Point of View Shot of a camera man(paparazzi) is used where we are looking down the lense of a camera and they are taking her picture with permission which is what she is singing about. This blurrs fiction and the truth as it presents the mediated text as reality. When she gets pushed off the balcony by her lover it fades into a Close Up of Lady Gaga's face behind a swirly black and white background. This is a Hitchcock Homage as this scene makes reference to the 1958 film 'Vertigo' which sticks with the theme of the music video of re-presenting the 1950's. The use of icy, remote blonde 'femme fatale' character is also a hallmark of a Hitchcock film. From this a movement match is used to a high angle, Long Shot of Lady Gaga on the floor with paparazi surrounding her taking photos. The use of the high angle camera shots connotes Lady Gaga as helpless and powerless especially as she is injured. During this scene, newspapers are shown with Lady Gaga on the front page with titles like 'No More Gaga'. These newspapers, the narrative of the music video and style of the music video has intertextual reference to Sunset Boulevard (1950). At this point, the music begins to fade in and it cuts to a Medium Shot of a black limo infront of a long purple carpet with a man about to open the door and one getting ready to push the wheelchair. When it cuts to Lady Gaga being lifted out of the limo we see her diamonte neck brace which has connotations of glamour, money and being faboulous. Lady Gaga's costume in this scene relates to what people who consider as fashion in the 1950's such as her sunglasses with flaps that transformes them into reading glasses was stylish eyewear in the 1950's. Also, later on in the music video there is an Extreme Close Up of red lipstick lips which was very popular with young women in the 50's. When Lady Gaga is being pushed down the purple carpet, there is a Close-Up of Lady Gaga's face then cuts to a Long Shot of Lady Gaga as a humanoid that gets up and tries to walk. The humanoid breaks down distinction between binary divides and the difference between humans and robots. This humanoid also has intertextual reference to the Fembot in Fritiz Lang's 1927 film Metropolis. Near the end of the music video there is a reference to popular culture through Lady Gaga wearing sunglasses which resembles mickey and minnie mouses' ears. This is reinforced by her wearing a yellow jumpsuit with mickey and/or minnie mouse's silhouette printed on it. This will gratify audiences as they are familar with those characters and are interested on the different take on it. The video ends with an Iris-Out to a black background with 'The End' on it then cuts to different lists which state the Casts, Production and the Production company. This relates to the 50's as it was the conventional way to end a program. Within the video different camera sizes are used. Close-Ups are used to show something that the director intended us to see. This is evident in the video where there is a Close-Up of different Lady Gaga merchandise such as her face on money notes and bottle caps with a g on it. This reminds audiences that it is a Lady Gaga music video. Long Shots are also used in the music to show performances like the dance scene which relates to pop music and is typical of music videos of that genre. Lastly, different editing techniques are used for different reasons. The Iris in/out are used as it is conventional of 1950's tv. Straight cuts are also used as they are conventional of music videos. The fading techniques are used to retain interest as they are different because this technique isn't normally used in music videos. In conclusion, I feel that this music video is a successful postmodernist text as it uses many of conventions such as Blurring reality and fiction, Homage, Pastiche and Intertextuality. Also it represents the 1950's and is obvious to audiences that it is the 1950's but adds contemporary aspects such as the updated humanoid to keep up with this decade. Generally I feel this music video would appeal to young audience and would gratify them as it provides them with a new/different perspective of music videos.

POST MODERNISM
HOW MODERNISM IS DEFINED -Art / social political movement that aimed to reinvent culture that had become outdated. -Ocurred roughly between 1890s and 1960s -A rejection against realism -Divisions of modernism include avant-garde and surrealism -Films/Novels/Art were self-reflexive of society.
HOW POSTMODERNISM IS DEFINED -From 1970s onwards -The breakdown of barriers between genres and style -The breakdown of distinction between binary divides (E.G Human and Machine) -Mixing up time, space and narrative -Emphasis of style over content -Blurring of fiction and reality/representation and the real world. -Becoming more use to a mediated version of reality, than reality itself (hyperreality)
CONVENTIONS OF POST-MODERNISM INTERTEXTUALITY- One media text referring to another. PARODY- mocking something in an original way.
1970/1980's cop series
Beastie Boys-Sabotage Music Video
The Simpsons also use parodies both in high and low cultures to a wide range of audiences. The idea of parody mainly promotes that there is no difference between high art and mass culture.
PASTICHE- An artistic work in a style that imitates that of another work, artist or period. This is a self-conscious imitation. For instance Madonna imitation of Marilyn Monore's Gentleman prefer blondes in her Material Girl music video. BRICOLAGE- Mixing up and using different genres and styles. This is most common in films and movies such as Blade Runner comprising of Film Noir and Sci-Fi and Shaun of the Dead which is zombie mixed with romantic comedy but also happens in music. For example, DJ Shadow's Entroducing which is the first album to be completely made up of sampled music. HOMAGE- Imitation from a respectful standpoint. For instance the orginal psycho movie made in 1960 and the remake made in 1998.

MARXIST APPROACH
Marxism was founded by Karl Marx and it belived that the media and its messages could be used for good if in the right hands. However, with dominant ideology (dominant belief held by a society) the message could be dangerously influential and controlling the effect of the masses(general population/Hoi Poloi).
THE DOMINANT IDEOLOGY The ideological forces that determine how society functions. Marxists believe that all powerful insitutions subtly control how we, the masses, conduct our lives within society. These insitutions (media) comprise of The press, Tv, Internet and the music industry, to name a few.
THE MEDIA'S MESSAGE Marxists believe that the media plays a significant part in controlling the masses and some would say as an insitution it is greater influence on society than religion, politics and the family (nature over nuture). The supposed subtle dominance with which the media control the masses is known as hegemonic control.
HEGEMONY This was an ideological concept first introduced by Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci. He believed that the media message would perform a subtle indoctrination, influencing the manner in which society viewed the world until the message becomes 'common sense', unchallenged by the masses. Hegemonic control is an acceptance of the 'status quo'.
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS- GOLDIE-INNERCITY LIFE
RELEASE DATE: 1995
Innercity life by Goldie revolves around the pressure of living in the city which is illustrated through a single mother and her two kids who live in a council estate in a small flat with different daily pressures such as paying the bills which is highlighted through a Extreme Close Up of BT bills. The video opens with an establishing, high angle shot of the city then fades into a bird's eye shot of an estate than the camera pulls in. The use of this techique is to acknowledge the setting of the music video. With in this music video there are different settings and locations that connote different things. One location is a club. The party scene in the club is used to represent escaping pressure of the city by having a good time. Another location is the estate. When showing the estate and people within it; high angle shots are predominantly used to show their vunerablity, their class in society (working class) and their lack of control they have especially over their lives as the pressure from living in city are controlling them. eg bills need to be paid therefore people may need to work harder. There are many message and represenations embedded throughout the music video that the Marxists would argue that it either positive, realistic or negative. One is where we see a black man in a BMW Convertible which is an expensive car and through stereotyping we assume that he is a drug dealer producing a negative representation of black man. Within the music video there is a long shot of a trolley being pushed off the top of an estate roof. This has a negative reference to youths as it presents them as trouble-makers and careless. The message is about youths are reinforced a car being lit on fire with a Long shot used to highlight this. This could be considered by the marxists as an realistic message, although it is exaggerated as youth in society and through the media are seen as violent, trouble-makers who do not care or consider others. This conforms with hegemony and hegemonic control. Hegemonic control is maintained in the video through different aspects like the single mother. The single mother with kids, struggling living in an council estate is considered as a realistic representation that is unchallenged by the masses. Especially where we see that mother in the last scene sleeping by herself then a man appearing who sleeps with her then fades away representing abandoning fathers. Although hegemonic control is maintained within the video, it is also challenged through positive messages especially of the youth. Within the video there is a Medium Close Up used to show a boy in a hooded top with the hood up and the council estate in the background. At first stereotypical representations are first thought such as being bad and most probably doing something wrong but then it eventually fades to a high angled Long Shot of that boy and his friends playing basketball which is harmless and he is not doing something bad therefore subverting dominant ideology. The club scene futher challenges hegemony control. Outside the club there is a close up, tracking shot of something being passed from hand to hand. We later discover that it is a CD. This subverts dominant ideology as normally it would be thought that it was drugs that was being passed from hand-to-hand especially in a club scene but it was not. The video has a niche young audience which are gratified through scenes in the video that are familar to them like the scene. There are different editing techiques used in the music video. Fades in/out are predominately used in the music video to retain interest of the audience but also because it is different from other music videos and many do not use this technique. Straight cuts are also used which is conventional of a music video. This was especially used in the club scenes alongside Close-Ups to reflect the fast pace of the environment and the music. Lastly, there are different camera angles and shots used within the music video. Close-Ups are used to highlight significant things in the video that the director wants used to take notice of such as the Close-Up of the Phone Bills. Long Shots are used to show what is happening in the video such as when the children were playing basketball. High angle shots are used to promote vunerability and Low angle shots are used to show that some characters in the video are gaining control and are not trouble by the pressure of the innercity. E.g in the video there is a Medium Close Up of two men laughing which shows that they are having a good time and are care free. In Conclusion, both conforms and challenges hegemonic control and the marxist explanation is cleary evident in this video making it successful.
MISSY ELLIOT
Missy Elliot rejects conventional representations of women and doesn't conform to stereotypical gender representations therefore is free from objectification.
ANALYSIS OF MISSY ELLIOT-SHE'S A BITCH
This is a performance based music video. I feel that Missy Elliot subverts stereotypical female characteristics in this video in my ways mainly through the mise-en-scene. Her costume is very androgynous*: Bald, leather, spiked costume, jewel encrusted which shows her body image as refusing to conform to idealised female stereotypes. This is reinforced by Missy driving fast cars and the fact that towards the end of the video she sticks out her tongue showing she doesn't take her video/music/lyrics seriously. This gives audiences an alternative ideology about women. The video uses codes and conventions from a traditionally male geared futuristic sci-fi films. Missy herself inhabits the persona's of iconic male American Heroes such as The Cowboy. The camerawork in this video contributes to giving an alternative view of women. The use of low angle and crane shots highlight the spectacle of Missy's power. Aspects of the video conforms to stereotypes. The video uses female dancers in minimal clothing. This conforms to the idea that in music women are seen as decorative objects dance/pose and don't play instruments. I feel that this is done to grafity audiences of the Hip Hop genre as it is a typical code used within it and audiences are familar with it. The use of male dancers in the video subverts the idea that men in music are more active and instrumental as there is a role-reversal of the men in the video seen as objects that pose and dance whilst Missy takes on the active male instrumentalist role.
*androgynous= Masculine codes of movement, stance & dress e.g. tailored suits/shirt & tie, dungarees/army wear
TEXTUAL ANALYSIS-PUSSYCAT DOLLS- BUTTONS DIRECTOR: Francis Lawrence RELEASE DATE: 2005 PERFORMANCE BASED MUSIC VIDEO
The video opens with a Medium-Close Up of Snoop Dogg then cuts to a Long Shot of him. The mise-en-scene at this point contributes to creating a stereotypical perception of Snoop Dogg. His costume which consists of a Hoody, Cap and trainers are generic codes that conforms to the Hip Hop and Rap genre. This is reinforced later in the music video where there is a Close-Up of Snoop Dogg wearing jewellery (necklace) with his hood up and sunglasses on. From this it cuts to a Point of View, Long Shot of one of the members (Nicole Scherzinger) from the Pussycat Dolls. Point of View shot is from Snoop Dogg's point of view and is used to invite male viewers to join in with the voyeuristic male gaze (Feminist Reading). Nicole's costume and acting creates representations. At the beginning of the video she conforms to the feminist reading of females being seen as objects who dances as she dances on Snoop Dogg who is rapping and at this point isn't realised that she is also a musician. This theory is also highlighted near the end of the video where there is an aerial shot of The Pussycat Dolls who are used literally as objects to create patterns. This music video futher promotes feminist and post-feminist readings. The use of suggestive body language used by the Pussycat Dolls whilist dancing gives off the impression that they are promiscuous which is one of the categories that females are categorised in according to feminism. (Females are either classified as Mothers, Virgins or promiscous). Futhermore, that their sexual power is dervied from physical attractiveness to men. On the other hand, the Post-Feminist approach offers a different explanation. The costume of the group ( revealing clothes- black short dresses and heels) offers the message of sexual empowerment as they are assertive, provacative and in control of the 'Male Gaze'; therefore having a right to be sexually attractive if they want to as long as they are in control. This control is subtly shown in the music video when Nicole dances with Snoop Dogg and walks away from him in the beginning of the video and the fact that the group use provocative male address in their lyrics which challenges Snoop Dogg as they tell him to 'loosen up [their] buttons babe' which shows them giving him orders which subverts stereotype of males being more dominant than females. Lastly, this is further connoted through long, tracking shots of the group walking towards Snoop Dogg than walking away promoting that the Pussycat Dolls are 'too hot to handle' for Snoop Dogg. The post-feminist reading also views the group as being confident, sassy, sexy icons challenging traditional assumptions about passive sexuality. This is connoted through their lyrics where 'I'm a sexy mama' is said. The lighting and effects used in the video promotes sexuality and being provocative. The dark lighting used of brown and gold promotes luxury and intimacy. The use of CGI (Computer Generated Imagery) of the fire can be seen to connote the Pussycat Dolls as they are 'hot'. The camerawork and editing of this music video conforms to a performance based music video through the used of tracking shots,Long shots and Close Ups used during performances and the straight cuts used. In conclusion, I personally agree with the post-feminist reading of this music video, through the amount of control that the females in the group had, however I still see how some aspects of the music video can conform to a feminist reading.

Textual Analysis of Snoop Dogg- Vato
The Snoop Dogg Music Video of Vato begins with a Close-Up (Cu) of Snoop Dogg sitting at a table in jail. Hard lighting is used within this shot to create a serious mood but also relates to the serious consequences of his actions which he later recalls. From this a fade is used to the next scene of a Cu of two parked cars and legs walking inbetween them. The use of this editing technique (fade) signifies the beginning of something that happened in the past and Snoop Dogg is recalling what had happened. The generic codes and conventions of this video help identify it as a rap/hip hop music video. Generic Codes used in the video such as Snoop Dogg wearing baggy trousers, long t-shirt, new era cap and his hair in plaits help distinguish it as a rap video. This is reinforced by the amount of jewellery evident in the video. Snoop Dogg is wearing lots of jewellery ( necklace, bracelet, watch and 3 rings) and a Cu of Snoop Dogg's pendant is used to highlight this. The video also subtly subverts conventional generic codes of hip hop videos as the females included in the video were wearing minimal clothing but it wasn't highlighted as they weren't dancing but being used as part of a group. The conventions in this video subvert conventional hip hop videos as this video is a hybrid of performance and narrative video whereas conventional hip hop videos would be performance based. Also, this video has a cyclical narrative as it begins and ends in the same place. The Mise-en-Scene within this video produces many representations and aids the video in telling a story. The locations within the video contribute to this. The video begins with us being in a middle-class area which is signified through the big houses and luxurious cars like a Range Rover. This contrasts with the other settings that are present like the outside of a tattoo parlour and the alleyway which looks more ruff and deprived which shows the difference between the kinds of areas rappers grew up in and where they are now. The costume contributes to representations. In the beginning of the music video, a gang is attempting to rob Snoop Dogg. Through their costume it is evident they are part of a gang as their hoods are up, hiding their face and are wearing baggy jeans. This represents some of the activities involved with hip hop and rap. Also the fact that the Hispanic characters are covered with tattoos which shows that they are pain-resistant and brave as the process of being tattooed is painful therefore stereotyping those who listen to or are in hip hop/rap posses these characteristics. The props used presents the audience with stereotypes. the fact that there is gambling within the video which is legal but still seen as bad and the use of guns and shootings within the video promotes violence and criminal act which which again stereotypes people (those who are in hip hop or listen to it) being violent and unrighteous. This is reinforced by the fact that Snoop Dogg has a blue bandana hanging out the left side of his pocket as this has reference to US society particularly in LA with gang rivalry the crips and the bloods. This is highlighted throughout the video. The bloods are a gang which represent the East Coast of LA who are mainly made up of Hispanics and is identified through a signature colour red whilst the crips are from the West Coast of LA, predominately African American and is identified through their blue colour. Near the end of the video, there is a long shot of two crews positioned either side of the frame; The African Americans are positioned left of the frame and Snoop Dogg is in the front representing him as a gang leader whilst the Hispanics are placed to the right of the frame with B-Real (another rapper who is Hispanic) placed in the front giving him the same status as Snoop Dogg. From this the two shake hands (Snoop Dogg and B-Real). This subverts representations and LA stereotypes as they are creating peace instead of fighting which isn't what we expect. To an extent I feel that this is sends a message to societies and gangs to create peace instead of fighting. There are little effects used in this music video. One is animation. When the onomatopoeic word 'Plow' is said by Snoop Dogg is written on screen positioned in the centre of the frame. This is important as it not only highlights the significance of the word but evokes emotion as the word mimics the sound of a gun shot and the speed in which it appears gives the audience the feeling of being shot. Another effect used is the fade out of the music near the end of the video. At the end of the video there is a cut back to the jail scene where Snoop Dogg is sitting at the table talking to someone. At this point the music fades out and becomes non-diegetic sound. This represents the transition of going from the past back to the present. Also, ambient and diegetic sound in this scene makes the representation of the jail more realistic. This is through the chattering in the background and the fact that when Snoop Dogg gets up to walk out of the room we hear chains rustle which signifies hand cuffs. A medium shot is used of a policeman outside the room further confirms that it is a jail. Within this music video, the images and the sound closely relate. During the performance scenes the rapping are in sync and during scenes where B-Real is telling is telling the gang what happened. Furthermore, at the beginning Snoop Dogg has more of a narrator role as he is telling us what happened. This is evident through the lyrics as he uses words that represent the past like 'I was'. Lastly, the sound and the images are closely linked as Snoop Dogg is showing the audience what happened through the images but telling us through the music. The music video is made up of a number of camera angles and shot sizes. There is excessive use of Cu and Mcu (medium close up) for us to see facial expressions or draw attention to what the director wants us to see. For instance, A Cu of Snoop Dogg's spinning pendant which signifies wealth. Techniques like the use of a handheld camera was used when the gang were running away from Snoop Dogg to show their perspective and add realism. Lastly, tracking shots were used for the performance scene and low angle shots were used of Snoop Dogg which shows his superiority. Lastly, the video is predominately made up of centre framed shots and cuts. This is to retain interest, make it upbeat and fast to relate to the storyline as it is tense, fast and violent through shooting in the beginning. There is use of logical pattern of sequence near the end of the video as it goes from a long shot of Pharrell to a Medium-Close Up then a Close Up. This technique is appealing and clarifies that it is Pharrell. Lastly, there is use of Shot Reverse Shots within the music video during conversations. For instance, when Snoop Dogg was in jail talking to another character. This helps the audience follow the storyline as they can see their facial expressions. In conclusion, to an extent this text commits to the genre's stereotype through the codes that I had mentioned before such as the jewellery and the costume. This gratifies target audeinces as they are familar with what is going on and the fact that it is easy to identify the music video as a rap video. The target audience I feel will be further gratified through the way the video subverts situations such as the African American and Hispanic rivalry in LA as it provides them with a new perspective and views situations in a different light.
